Depression/Anxiety During/After Pregnancy

Becoming a parent can be one of the most rewarding and difficult experiences in life. For many, it is the single biggest life-shift in responsibilities, priorities, sleep, freedom, and time. Despite the immense joys and privileges of parenthood, this shift is often overwhelming or destabilizing.  

 

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) affect 15-20% of women, making it the most common perinatal complication.  PMAD’s do not discriminate and can impact anyone.  

 

Symptoms of Perinatal Depression May Include 

  • Feeling weak and devastated 

  • Crushing sadness, hopelessness, rage 

  • Appetite changes

  • Worry about not being fit to be a mother or that having a baby was a mistake 

  • Feeling detached from the baby 

  • Feeling completely overwhelmed and unable to cope 

  • Loss of identity or connection to life before baby 

 

Symptoms of Perinatal Anxiety May Include

  • Difficulty controlling worry

  • Agitation, irritability 

  • Difficulty sleeping due to racing thoughts or checking on baby 

  • Constantly feeling on edge or as though you’re not doing things properly.  

  • Disturbing intrusive thoughts (often about the baby) that may feel too scary to say out loud.  

  • Isolation and fear of leaving the house

  • Difficulty in being able to swallow or eat 


Counseling Helps. Postpartum mood disorders are very common and are treatable.  Often women find a combination of therapy, support groups and medications are helpful.
